I've been a participant since 2003. Did I ever get anywhere? No. All those years I never even officially signed up. What was I missing?
This year I met two other people at my school who wanted to try NaNoWriMo for the first time. I enthusiastically asked them how they heard about it. Fortunately for me, they heard about it from the local bookstore where a group of people were gathering that night to kickoff their month of novel-writing.
30 days later, 4 out of ten of us have completed our 50,000 word goal. It was bittersweet. None of us wanted to stop writing. The result, we'll be meeting every Thursday now. Through December and January we'll be editing (or finishing) our novels and in February we start mini-NaNo: 500 words of writing everyday.
But I decided I'm in a perfect situation to accomplish more than that. I have confidence in my 50,000 words. I'm going to edit it and start finishing the plethora of novels I've started before, by setting a goal (probably the 1667 required for NaNo) and writing every day. Here's to inspiration!
